Peta’s Christmas advert is a touching story of friendship between a girl and a cow.
If there is one organisation that is particularly active during the holidays, it is Peta. The animal rights organisation launches a shocking campaign every year to encourage people to stop eating meat for Christmas dinner.
Last year they surprised us with a disturbing advert to discourage us from eating turkey at Christmas. This year, they have opted for a tender story of friendship between a girl and a cow, which, of course, cannot end well.
Peta Christmas Advert 2024: “The girl and the Cow”
“The Girl and the Cow” is the title of Peta’s Christmas advert, produced by the agency Atomic London and in collaboration with Hillside Animal Sanctuary, an association that rescues cows and other animals from the agricultural industry.
The piece shows us how a girl, returning from school after her trumpet lessons, decides to stop next to a farm to play the instrument for the cow. Each day, a little more, the girl rehearses the Christmas song while the cow listens attentively. When the big day of the performance arrives, the little girl, accompanied by her mother, goes to play the entire song for her. But the cow is no longer there.
Peta’s Christmas advert wants to invite us to reflect on the life that animals have in the food industry and the realities they have during the Christmas season.
According to Elisa Allen, Vice President of Programs at Peta: “Children naturally empathize with animals, but many young people – and adults – may not think about how their Christmas roast came from the same curious and loving cows they so easily make friends with.”
John Cherry, Executive Creative Director at Atomic London: “We wanted to tell an unforgettable story that feels like a typical, heartwarming Christmas advert – until it takes a sharp turn and shows the harsh reality behind the Christmas food industry.”
