Waitrose’s Christmas advert challenges us to find the culprit behind a heinous crime at Christmas dinner.
Christmas adverts tend to have a very strong tone. Warmth, emotion, adventure and humour are common elements in the Christmas campaigns of major brands. That is why when a different and original campaign is launched, it stands out above the rest.
This is the case of the Christmas advert from the British supermarket chain Waitrose, which invites us to play detective to solve a crime: Who has stolen the pudding for dessert? The campaign has been divided into two parts to discover the culprit.
Waitrose Christmas Advert: Sweet Suspicion
“Sweet Suspicion” is the title of the Waitrose Christmas Advert, the British supermarket chain. The advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi has been in charge of the advertising campaign and offers us a different Christmas story to find the culprit of stealing the pudding for dessert.
The piece shows us the preparation of a classic Christmas dinner. Everything seems to be going well while they prepare the food, set the table and the children play in the living room. Until a scream of horror puts everyone on alert. Someone has stolen the pudding for dessert.
Immediately, the placid story changes direction to become a game to discover the culprit. Questions, assumptions, accusations and much more to try to find the culprit. The Waitrose Christmas advert has accumulated more than 150 million views on social networks and the brand started a survey to find out the opinion of consumers.
Many had pointed to the cat, closely followed by Gamma and May, but no one had guessed the culprit. The brand unveiled a second part of the campaign entitled: “A Waitrose mystery: Solved” where the mystery was solved. In the end, the culprit was the chef Steve, who hid the pudding in the gingerbread house only to be discovered shortly after.

According to Dustin Demri-Burns, the actor who plays chef Steve: “I can totally relate to Steve and his pudding-stealing ways. The pressure of making Christmas wonderful can get to us all – sometimes we just want to eat our pudding in the shed, and that’s okay.”
