Deutsche Telekom’s Christmas advert shows how connections are created when barriers fall.

When Halloween is over, it’s time for Christmas adverts. The brand that is the first to launch this year is John Lewis, which has been preparing a trilogy of Christmas adverts since the end of September to showcase the festivities. Another of the first brands to announce its Christmas campaign is Deutsche Telekom.

The German telecommunications company has launched a moving advert in which they show us two magical worlds divided by an invisible barrier. A clear allegory to the polarisation that we are experiencing in society these days.

“The Bubbles” is Deutsche Telekom’s Christmas advert made by the agency MUW Saatchi & Saatchi and directed by Alex Feil. The brand wants to counterpoint those Christmas campaigns where everything is happiness and harmony to focus on the division that society is experiencing.

The piece shows us two girls from fantasy worlds who, at first glance, seem united. With clear signs of disapproval, the families do not want them to see each other, despite the fact that both have begun to forge a friendship. Suddenly, they find a physical barrier separating them, until they realise that the only way to be together will be to break the glass.

According to Ulrich Klenke, Chief Brand Officer at Deutsche Telekom: “As a brand, we want to connect people. We want to make it clear that it is important and possible to break down barriers in our minds. Our company is committed to social cohesion and greater tolerance. It does not tolerate hatred or incitement, discriminatory actions, racism or extremism in any form. We stand for what connects people, societies and cultures.”
