The Heineken commercial marks its 150th anniversary and boasts that its brand name is still not well pronounced.
Heineken, the Dutch beer brand celebrates 150 years. One of the most iconic and recognized brands in the world joins the select club of historical brands along with Nestlé, Bayer, Jack Daniel’s or Campbell.
They wanted to celebrate this anniversary by making it clear that they don’t care how people pronounce the name of their beer as long as they can have a good time with it.
“Heineken 150th anniversary” is the title of the Heineken commercial made by the LePub agency and produced by PrettyBird UK. A campaign inspired by the words of founder Freddy Heineken; which stressed that he did not sell beers but “Gezelligheid”. A Dutch word to describe the “good times” we had.
And it is precisely what Heineken wants to express in the advertising campaign for the 150th anniversary. The power of the social connections your products foster. For this we will see scenes in different parts of the world of people asking for a Heineken beer in very different ways; cameo appearance by Mika Häkkinen, the former Finnish Formula 1 driver included.
According to Bram Westenbrink, global head of the Heineken brand: “We are open-minded to how customers pronounce our name, because we don’t really care. In our 150-year history, we’ve learned that having fun doesn’t mean doing things the right way. It has more to do with the places and people you can enjoy our beer with.”
For his part, Bruno Bertelli, global CEO of LePub: “For 150 years Heineken has been much more than a beer, bringing global consistency to its strong local presence. Heineken doesn’t care how you pronounce its name, it cares about spurring good moments.”
