Nike’s advert reimagines its famous slogan to adapt it to new generations.
That Nike has marked a before and after in advertising with its famous slogan “Just Do It” is undeniable. The tagline, created by Wieden+Kennedy in 1988, has become one of the most iconic taglines in the sports world.
But new generations are bursting in with strength, and the brand is forced to reinterpret its communication. For them, Nike has decided to reinterpret the slogan and give it a twist to connect with Generation Z.
“Why Do It?” by Nike
The Nike advert is titled “Why Do It?” and was created by its long-time agency, Wieden+Kennedy. The brand tweaks its iconic advertising slogan in an attempt to connect with younger generations.
The piece features new international stars such as tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, NFL player Saquon Barkley, WNBA rising star Caitlin Clark, and established players like Vinicius and LeBron James.
Backed by epic music and the voiceover of rapper Tyler, the Creator, Nike’s advert challenges the audience with a provocative question: “Why take the risk if you might lose? But, what if you don’t?” accompanied by athletes facing extreme situations or celebrating decisive game-winning moments.
A campaign that arrives at a crucial moment, as Nike’s revenue fell by 10% in the last fiscal year and net profit by 44%. According to a company statement: “Greatness is no longer a guaranteed destination, but a daily decision. We want to invite new generations to find their own reason to do it, and not remain idle.”
