Pepsi advert for Super Bowl: “The Choice”

The BBDO agency was in charge of the advertising campaign

The Pepsi advert turns a Coca-Cola icon into the protagonist of a story about choice and identity.

If there is a historic rivalry in advertising, it is undoubtedly the one between Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Decades of competition have given rise to some of the industry’s most memorable comparative campaigns, where irony, provocation, and creative ingenuity have been common weapons.

One of the symbolic territories most fiercely protected by Coca-Cola has always been its polar bears, brand icons since the early 20th century.

Now Pepsi has decided to step directly into that imagery and turn it on its head with “The Choice”, a campaign that reinterprets the cola wars through humor and pop culture.

Pepsi – The Choice

The Pepsi advert is titled “The Choice”, was directed by New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, and will air during the Super Bowl commercial breaks.

The piece begins with Coca-Cola’s polar bear taking part in a blind taste test between Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Against all odds, the animal chooses Pepsi. What could have been a simple comparative gag becomes the trigger for the protagonist’s existential crisis.

The bear goes to therapy, reflects on his identity, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. A nod to the Coldplay meme is included, where both wave at the camera while drinking from their cans. All set to Queen’s “I Want To Break Free” playing in the background.

The Pepsi advert blends humor, pop culture, and emotional storytelling, turning a brand choice into a metaphor about daring to break with what’s established.

The polar bear, created using CGI, serves as a symbolic representation of that consumer who, when tasting without prejudice, “chooses differently”.

As the brand explains, he is not just an advertising icon, but “another cola lover who represents the vast majority of Americans”.
