Zevia advert reinterprets Cindy Crawford’s classic Pepsi campaign.

If there’s one campaign that has undoubtedly left a mark in advertising, it’s the one Cindy Crawford did for Pepsi in 1992. The advert quickly became a pop culture reference at a time when advertising codes were very different from today’s.

Even today, that commercial, considered one of the best Pepsi commercials, remains a reference for many creatives and brands who use it when they want to connect with audiences through nostalgic references. This is the case with the beverage brand Zevia, which has reinterpreted Pepsi’s campaign with a parodic tone.

“Get the Fake Outta Here” is the title of the Zevia advert created by Maximum Effort and produced by Really Original. The beverage brand aims to position Zevia as a healthy alternative to traditional soft drinks.

The piece features country music singer Jelly Roll parodying Cindy Crawford’s classic scene from the 1992 Pepsi commercial. However, some changes reflect current trends: instead of arriving in a red Lamborghini, he drives a red pickup truck. And when he approaches the vending machine, he grabs a can of Zevia, the stevia-sweetened soda.

Just like in the original ad, the singer is admired by two kids who break the fourth wall. They comment on Zevia’s clever move in choosing Jelly Roll as their brand ambassador. The campaign ends with the singer burping after drinking the can.

According to Kirsten Suarez, Zevia’s Chief Marketing Officer: “Our strategy is to make Zevia as anti-artificial as our products and make it stand out in popular culture.”
