The Super Bowl arrives with this Kawasaki ad that makes the “Mullet”, the famous haircut of the 80s, back in fashion.

The Super Bowl is coming, one of the most watched events on the entire planet. Synonymous with spectacle, the NFL playoffs bring together more than 100 million viewers. Quite a sweet treat for brands, who fight to advertise at the event by paying millions. Last year, more than $7 million was paid for a 30-second advert.

Many do not want to pay such amounts, and that is why they take advantage of this advertising trend to launch their campaigns despite not doing so directly at the event. This is the case of Kawasaki, who is willing to return to the 80s to recover an iconic hairstyle.

“Mullet” is the title of Kawasaki’s commercial for Super Bowl 2024. This name represents one of the most iconic haircuts of the 80s: short in the front and long in the back. A haircut that the brand intends to recover in its campaign.

The agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners has been in charge of the campaign and directed by Dave Laden and Christopher Gruse. The piece shows us the Kawaski Ridge, a small SUV that looks like a cross between a golf cart and a small truck.

This metaphor is what gives play to the eccentric Kawasaki advertisement, where we see how the protagonists grow the iconic Mullet hairstyle of the 80s. On their way they “mulletize” all those characters they meet, with a cameo from the legend of wrestling Steve Austin.

According to A.J. Warren, creative director of Goodby Silverstein & Partners: “The ‘mullet’ has been an American icon and a symbol of rebellion since the 1980s. In 2024 the ‘mullet’ has returned and done better than ever. Football players American and baseball players, rock stars and also actors currently sport this hairstyle. It is an advertisement that works in a simple and memorable way on the visual level, but that also informs the viewer about the characteristics of our vehicle.”
