“Midnight Opus“ is the title of Amazon’s Christmas advert made by the company’s in-house agency and directed by award-winning director Waine McClammy.
This year, Amazon’s ad tells the story of a theater janitor who goes about his daily maintenance tasks singing a song. His coworkers notice the musical talent that is resonating through the halls and feel that they must organize a special party for him. Said and done, his coworkers prepare the stage for him to sing on, with a staging worthy of the best nights.
The song sung by the janitor in Amazon’s Christmas ad is “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” the classic sung by Hal David and composed by Burt Bacharach in 1965.
Burt Bacharach said in his autobiography that this song had one of the most difficult lyrics that Hal David had ever written, despite its apparent simplicity. Although the melody and chorus were composed in 1962 in a waltz rhythm, it took David two years to find the right words. Once the verses were worked out, Bacharach commented that the song “wrote itself” and they finished it in a day or two.
The song’s success surprised both of them, as they were aware of the controversy over the Vietnam War, which was in the background of the lyrics. Bacharach has frequently used it as an opening and closing song in his live concerts well into the 2000s.
