In the past, when a song was played in an advertisement, it became an instant hit. Examples of this are the song in the Golf advert or this one from Vodafone. Nowadays, there are fewer and fewer advertisements that manage to surprise us with their music. Platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon have allowed instant access to a huge catalogue of songs and there are few that surprise us anymore.

The song in the Nike advert is titled “You Are My Sunshine” and is performed by Christina Perri. The American singer-songwriter rose to fame at the age of 24 when Fox used her single Jar of Hearts on the show So You Think You Can Dance in 2010. The song in the Nike commercial can be found on her album “Songs for Carmella: Lullabies & Sing-a-Longs” (2019), a collection of songs for babies.
Nike’s advert is titled “Sunshine” and was shot by agency Wieden+Kennedy Portland and directed by director collective Megaforce. The piece follows the lead of the Olympic Games campaign “Winning Isn’t for Everyone” but this time warning us that “Winning Isn’t Comfortable.”
Nike’s advert portrays the difficulties faced by runners who have decided to go out and train rather than stay at home. We see them running in the rain, in the mud or in the early hours of the morning, reflecting both the effort and tension as well as the feeling of accomplishment that everyone who achieves their goals achieves.
