How to prevent Meta from using my data to train AI
If you don't object, Meta will use your Instagram content to train its AI.
It is possible to prevent Meta from using my data to train AI — just follow these steps.
Starting on May 27, 2025, Meta will begin using your personal data to train its AI. This includes all data stored on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. But you can prevent it by following the steps outlined on this page.
Although Europe had previously opposed this successfully, Meta now claims that a lack of objection implies consent. Their argument is that if you don’t explicitly say you don’t want your data to be used, they will assume you agree. It’s a way of taking advantage of those who, out of laziness, won’t take the steps to stop Meta from using their data to train AI.
The personal data Meta will use to train AI includes everything except private messages. Your photos, comments, posts, stories, interactions, and captions. What they won’t use are your private messages and anything written in Messenger. If you are under 18, your data will not be used either.
On WhatsApp, for example, only conversations with Meta AI will be used, and group messages will only be used if Meta AI is mentioned. All other WhatsApp conversations will not be used. Because to train Meta’s AI, it is essential to understand how humans interact, their expressions, and the types of photos they use.
Prevent Instagram from using my data to train AI
On the next screen, click on Privacy Policy, and within the text, look for the word “Object” in the second paragraph, highlighted in blue (yes, they really tried to hide it). Clicking on “Object” will take you to a form where you’ll need to enter your email and comments. Make sure the email is sent from the address associated with your Facebook or Instagram account. You’ll then see a confirmation message stating that Meta will no longer use your data to train AI.

Now let’s see how to do it on Facebook. To prevent Facebook from using your data to train AI, log into your account and click on this link. You’ll see a box where you can select “Right to Object.” Once inside, you can fill out and submit the form.
You can also go to Settings & Privacy, then Privacy Center, and then Generative AI in Meta, where at the bottom you’ll find a Right to Object button.
